Decluttering the Bathroom

I’m decluttering the downstairs half bath – otherwise known as “unearthing things you had forgotten you shoved back there”. We have this cabinet in there that served the great function of storing and hiding things that we use infrequently.

I made this my next project because I knew that my husband hates this cabinet and would not have a problem with me throwing it out. Tomorrow is garbage day so I’m decluttering the bathroom – under the sink and everything in the cabinet.

Decluttering the Bathroom

This is not my bathroom above. I wish it were! The reality is, my bathrooms are very small and very full! Here is a picture of the cabinet that my husband hates:

I’m learning that flat surfaces and extra cabinets are not our friend when we are trying to reduce clutter. We don’t need more bookshelves or cabinets or containers. We need to deal with the stuff  that is hidden behind the doors and drawers. We need to stop delaying the decisions of whether we will keep, trash, or donate. I know this is easier said than done.

All the stuff unconfined

Wow. Who knew 2 smaller cabinets could hold so much junk! We had six vases, multiple boxes of lightbulbs, and way too many candles. We also had a box of Swiffer wetjet cleaning pad refills and we haven’t had a working Swiffer in years.

With the cabinet going in the trash, I’ll have to decide on new homes for the things I want to keep that are still useful. There’s going to be a much smaller space to store things in the bathroom so it’ll force me to reduce quite a bit.

I’ll post the after photos in a few days.

What do you have under your bathroom sink that you’ve forgotten about? Please tell me I’m not the only one!

On of the ways my small bathroom has kept me from clutter! There’s just not enough room for something like that. 🙂 I did recently go through and throw away anything that wasn’t mine since the revolving door of roommates over the last 7 years has yielded some random left-behinds that weren’t dealt with until I lived alone for a spell and took the opportunity to purge!

And if I’m honest there were some of those “forgotten” items that were mine that I just left there for years too so you’re certainly not alone. Some of them were “useful” items but the fact that they just sat forgotten for so long shows that they were not being used! Feels SO good to throw things like that out.

I can’t blame roommates – but I do blame the doors and drawers hiding the things that were useful at one point but not anymore!

I can’t wait to see the results! I saw in the picture that you have a lot of glass vases. I have those too! Except, I’m not sure where mine are at the moment… 🙂

Katie – did you check in any of your under the sink cabinets?!?

My bathroom is very small as well. We have a pedestal sink so there is really no storage besides the medicine cabinet. That’s the positive.. The negative is that I have to constantly reorganize my linen closet!

I was working on re-organizing my bedside table and…whew…what a mess. You are not alone in this area of throwing things just to store them for later! LOL! I can’t wait to see the finished result. It looks like you were making great strides!

Thanks Michelle! I’m trying to deal with “stuff” as its unearthed now – no more shoving it aside for later

I just did this a few months ago and it was unbelievable how much disorganized junk I had in there. Because it was so disorganized, Phillip had like 4 half-used deodorants in the drawer (because he could never find one so he’d start a new one) and I had probably 3 or 4 open packages of tampons under the sink!

Ha! we have definitely had that same situation come up where “lost” things are “found”! Now if only we could find some lost money…

It is so easy to shove stuff that you don’t know where to put in to places that they don’t belong. Good luck with the decluttering project. Thanks for sharing. #ConfessionsLinkUp

Great job! I’ve recently learned the lesson too- get rid of furniture that just allows pile-up of clutter!
When I moved, I got rid of an enormous bookshelf, and my dresser. (My new place has one built-in)
    And a fabric storage cabinet.
I’ve been shocked at how much less stuff I can get by on!
