You might be surprised by this statement.
I’m decluttering (even playing the minsgame this month!).
I call myself an aspiring minimalist.
I emphasize giving, experiences, and time in nature more than consumerism.
Yet I’m also a sucker for good deals and am innately frugal.
Why I Shop Black Friday
My husband and I are not big shoppers. We are not the type to run out and buy the latest gadgets. We keep and use things as long as they’re usable…which is a large part of our clutter problem.
But sometimes we need (or want) to buy things. When I know there is usually a good deal on Black Friday or Cyber Monday for that item or items, we will hold off on purchasing those things until Thanksgiving Weekend. In the past I’ve bought a vacuum cleaner, sheets for our beds, our smartphones, and comforters.
This year we’ve been waiting to buy a flat screen tv. This will be our first tv purchase…ever. We have a tv right now, and have had tvs in the past, but they’ve all been used and passed down from generous friends or family members who are upgrading. We haven’t been particularly picky about the kind of tv we’ve had in our home. We don’t have cable and only use the tv for movies and video game time for the kids.
I could not tell you about picture and sound quality. My husband is actually quite picky about both of those things and is researching the best purchase within the amount we have budgeted. Our kids have been patiently waiting and satisfied with our current flat screen tv:
I’m actually quite excited about reclaiming the space that our past tube tvs have taken. I think it will make quite a difference.
We won’t be leaving Thanksgiving dinner to shop.
We won’t be lining up in the cold, waiting for hours to make a purchase.
We won’t be buying impulsively.
We won’t be crazed and stampeding other customers or employees.
We’ll probably purchase online from the comfort of our home. We will enjoy savings on a purchase that we admittedly do not need, but want. It will not take away from our enjoyment of one another, family, or great food.
We wish you a peaceful, gratitude filled Thanksgiving, whether you shop this weekend or not. Happy Thanksgiving!
Putting so much thought into a purchase is clearly “living with intention”. You remain an inspiration.
Thanks Emma. That means a lot. Thank you for commenting
We are of the same minds! We have been holding off on a couple of purchases that we know will go on sale this Friday – namely a vacuum cleaner that exploded a couple of weeks ago. Also, last year one store had a great deal on kayaks (that we have been waiting to buy since summer), but I don’t think they have them this year. There are a few other items as well. We will not line up in the cold, go on Thursday night or get up before dawn, but we are frugal and there are some good deals on those days that make sense to take advantage of.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family!
Thank you Lisa. I didn’t think we were the only ones. Enjoy your Thanksgiving as well!!
I admire you! Waiting till a great deal comes is wonderful!
I don’t shop on Thanksgiving either. But, Friday? Oh yeah! I might be out there with the crowds myself!
I think shopping Black Friday from your couch is totally legit! I will be in a few moments (looking for some Christmas gifts for the boys and a pair of khaki pants for me!). And good for you for holding off, but you do need to treat yourself once in awhile. I like to make the concert analogy – we used to buy lawn seats to concerts to save money, but you know what kind of craziness you may be getting yourself into by that choice, not to mention uncooperative weather. We work too hard – we now buy our concert seats under cover 🙂 So what TV did you end up purchasing?
